Moving and Storage Tips

Let’s face it, we all want our moving experience to go down without a hitch. Sometimes a move from one place to another requires setting up a storage unit in the between stages, and there are times when a storage unit is needed due to unforeseen circumstances. Regardless of how well your move goes, it is important to know and understand storage tips as you prepare for your move.

Tip #1 Know the Costs

Storage companies can charge by the week or by the month, the latter being the cheaper option due to it guaranteeing revenue for the storage company. Units are priced by size, and be aware city storage facilities are more expensive than suburbs. It’s important to shop around and find the best rate for your situation. Many storage companies offer discounts for first-time users in order to reach capacity.

Tip #2 Know what to Store

Like all businesses, there are rules for what you can and can’t store at storage facilities. Common items that cannot be stored are flammable objects, paint, gasoline, and perishable food. Typically, your larger possessions are prime candidates to store in a facility. This would include couches, mattresses, and other large furniture items. When in doubt about what can or cannot be stored, always call the storage facility and ask.

Tip #3 Prepare for Storage

In order to maintain the condition of items stored, it is imperative to prepare them for storage. Typically, items in a plastic storage bin rather than moving boxes will last longer in storage. It is best to break down large furniture items like beds in order to save space. Labeling boxes and creating an inventory list will make life easier as well.
