The Beginning: A Bike Shed, a Whiteboard, and a Dream (2018)
In the winter of 2018, Calvin Krech walked the halls of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity house at Oregon State University with a simple pitch: help him move people on weekends and earn some cash. No fancy trucks. No warehouse. Just a group of fraternity brothers, a borrowed pickup, and the kind of work ethic you build hauling couches up three flights of stairs in the Corvallis rain.
What started as a way to fund his college life quickly became something bigger. By the end of that first year, Calvin was assembling three to five crews a day during peak season, all built from that same SAE brotherhood and the word-of-mouth trust they earned one move at a time.
The Early Days: Townhouse HQ and a Truck on the Street
The first “headquarters” was a rented townhouse down the street from the SAE house. Calvin set up a whiteboard on the wall to plan routes, stacked equipment in the garage, and ran the entire operation from that small space. It wasn’t glamorous, but it was the launchpad for everything Cal’s Moving would become.
In those earliest days, Calvin didn’t even have a parking lot. The first box truck, with “Cal’s Moving Help — Moving the Willamette Valley” painted on the side, was parked on the street near the National Guard building in Corvallis. Every morning started with a walk down the block to fire up the truck and get to work.
Growing Across Oregon
Calvin built up the Corvallis branch move by move, earning the trust of families and students across the Willamette Valley. As his fraternity brothers graduated from Oregon State, many joined the crew full-time, and Cal’s started expanding north. Originally from Portland, Calvin always planned to bring the company home.
Today, Cal’s Moving & Storage operates four branches across Oregon — in Tigard, Beaverton, Corvallis, and Eugene — serving the entire Willamette Valley corridor and Portland metro area with fast, reliable service. Our team of 50+ dedicated crew members and fleet of 15 modern, well-maintained trucks have completed over 10,000 moves, including more than 500 long-distance interstate relocations reaching every corner of the continental United States.
From the moment you speak with Cal or Morgan until the last box is set down in your new home, you can call us, ask questions, make changes, or just vent about the stress of moving. We get it. Moving is hard. That’s exactly why we built a company around making it easier.
