Oregon’s Trusted Piano Moving Specialists — Safe, Insured Transport for Every Piano Type
Moving a piano takes more than muscle — it requires specialized equipment, trained crews, and careful planning. At Cal’s Moving & Storage, our piano movers are experienced in safely transporting upright, baby grand, grand, concert, and antique pianos throughout Oregon. Whether you’re relocating across town or across the state, we handle your instrument with the care it deserves.
Pianos are heavy, fragile, and often hold tremendous financial and sentimental value. Our team arrives fully equipped with piano boards, custom padding, ramps, and ratchet straps designed specifically for piano transport. Every move includes full insurance coverage for your peace of mind.
Types of Pianos We Move
Upright Pianos
Standard upright and console pianos typically weigh 300–500 lbs. Our crews handle stairway moves, tight hallways, and narrow doorways with specialized dollies and padding to protect both your piano and your home.
Baby Grand Pianos
Baby grands (500–600 lbs) require careful disassembly of legs, quilted padding of the body, and secure transport on a piano board. Our team reassembles and places your piano exactly where you want it at your new location.
Grand & Concert Pianos
Full grand pianos weigh 600–1,200+ lbs and demand specialized crews with piano boards, skids, and heavy-duty straps. We have the equipment and experience to move even the largest concert instruments safely.
Digital & Electric Pianos
Electronic keyboards and digital pianos receive secure packing and careful transport to prevent damage to sensitive electronics and components.
Antique & Vintage Pianos
Irreplaceable heirloom instruments get extra care with custom padding, climate-aware handling, and gentle transport techniques to preserve their condition and value.
Why Oregon Trusts Cal’s for Piano Moving
Specialized Equipment
We use professional piano dollies, ramps, heavy-duty padding blankets, and ratchet straps designed specifically for piano transport. The keyboard lid is secured, and all exposed surfaces are wrapped in quilted padding.
Experienced Piano Crews
Our movers specialize in piano relocation and understand how to handle the weight, balance, and fragility of every piano type. We assess stairways, doorways, and pathways before moving day to plan the safest route.
Full Insurance Coverage
Every piano move includes comprehensive insurance protection. Your instrument is covered from the moment our crew arrives until it’s safely placed in your new location.
Safe & Careful Process
We close and secure the keyboard lid, wrap the entire piano in quilted blankets, and strap it to a piano board for transport. For grand pianos, we carefully remove the legs and wrap the body before loading. Every step is performed slowly and deliberately.

Our Piano Moving Process
Step 1: Assessment & Planning — We evaluate your piano type, weight, and the move environment. We measure doorways, hallways, and stairways to plan the safest route.
Step 2: Preparation & Wrapping — The keyboard lid is locked or secured, all surfaces are wrapped in quilted padding blankets, and the piano is strapped to a piano board. Grand piano legs are carefully removed.
Step 3: Transport — Your piano is loaded into our truck using ramps or carry techniques appropriate for the situation. It’s secured with ratchet straps to prevent any shifting during transit.
Step 4: Delivery & Placement — At your new location, we carefully unload, unwrap, reassemble (if needed), and place your piano exactly where you want it.
Frequently Asked Questions About Piano Moving
How much does a piano move cost in Oregon?
Piano moving cost depends on the type of piano — an upright is very different from a grand — plus the distance and the access at both ends, including stairs, doorways, and elevators. Because every piano move is different, and because Oregon law requires an in-person look for an accurate quote, we provide a free estimate.
Do I need to tune my piano after a move?
Yes, we recommend it. A piano needs time to settle into its new space, and the temperature and humidity changes during a move can affect the tuning. Most piano technicians suggest waiting a few weeks after the move, then having it tuned.
Can you move a piano up or down stairs?
Yes. Our crews are trained and equipped to move pianos up and down stairs safely, using proper piano boards, straps, and padding. We assess the staircase ahead of time and bring the right crew size for the job.
How far in advance should I book a piano move?
One to two weeks’ notice is usually enough for a piano move, though earlier is better during the busy summer season. Tell us your piano type and the access at both ends, and we’ll get it scheduled.
Do you insure the piano during transport?
Your piano is covered by valuation protection during the move. As with every Oregon move, you choose a valuation option — basic released-value coverage at no charge, or replacement-cost protection for added peace of mind. We explain both options when we quote your move.
Do you move other heavy specialty items?
Yes. Beyond pianos, our crews handle safes, hot tubs, pool tables, gym equipment, and other heavy or awkward items — anything that needs special equipment and handling to move safely.
