Every move is different, so cost depends on your home’s size, how far you’re going, and services like packing or storage. Cal’s gives free, no-obligation written estimates done in person — not rough numbers over the phone — so the price you see is the price you plan around. Our Oregon moving costs guide explains what goes into a quote.
An accurate quote depends on actually seeing what’s being moved — furniture, access, stairs, and how much you’ve already packed. Phone quotes routinely miss things and lead to surprise charges on move day. An in-person walkthrough lets us give you a written estimate you can trust. It’s free, takes about 20 to 30 minutes, and there’s no obligation.
A binding estimate locks in a set price for the agreed scope of work. A non-binding estimate is based on expected time and weight, so the final cost can move up or down with the actual job. We walk you through which one applies to your move during your estimate, so there are no surprises later.
We aim for no surprises. A few situations can affect cost — long carries from the truck to the door, stairs or elevators, bulky specialty items, or an extra stop — and your in-person estimate accounts for all of it up front. If anything changes before move day, just tell us and we’ll update your written estimate.
Oregon is one of the few states that regulates intrastate moving rates, through the Oregon Department of Transportation. Movers must file a tariff with ODOT. Cal’s applied for and was approved to operate under its own independent, ODOT-approved tariff. Our Oregon moving costs guide explains how the state’s rate rules work.
We recommend booking two to four weeks ahead, and earlier for summer moves or dates near the end of the month, when demand peaks. Earlier booking gives you the widest choice of dates and crews. If you’re on a shorter timeline, still call us — we do our best to fit in last-minute moves whenever we can.
Summer and the last week of any month are the busiest, so those dates fill first. Moving midweek or mid-month often means more flexibility and easier scheduling. We move year-round in every season, so if your dates are firm, book early; if they’re flexible, we can suggest options that are easier to schedule.
Once your date is set, we confirm the details in writing — crew size, truck, timing, and any packing or storage you’ve added. We’ll answer questions as move day approaches and let you know what to have ready. You’ll have a clear plan well before the day, not a last-minute scramble.
Yes. Plans shift, and we’ll work with you. If you need to reschedule or cancel, contact us as early as you can so we can adjust the calendar and offer your slot to someone else. We’ll explain any scheduling details when you book, so you know exactly how changes are handled.
Yes. Every estimate is free and comes with no obligation. We schedule a convenient time to walk through your home in person, look at what’s being moved, and give you a clear written estimate. It’s the best way to get an accurate number and ask any questions before you commit to a date.
It depends on your home’s size, how much you’re moving, access at both ends, and how much is packed and ready. A small apartment may take a few hours; a larger house can take most of a day or longer. Your written estimate includes a realistic time range so you can plan the day.
Yes. Our crews disassemble beds, tables, and other large furniture at your old home and reassemble everything at the new one. It’s a standard part of a full-service move — no need to take apart your bed frame yourself. Just point out anything that needs special handling when we arrive.
Our crews move, place, and position your major appliances exactly where you want them. For final hookups involving gas, water, or electrical connections, we recommend a licensed technician for safety and warranty reasons. We’re glad to set the appliance in place so it’s ready for that final connection.
Wherever possible, yes — the closer the truck parks, the faster and smoother your move goes. If you’re in an apartment, downtown, or a permit-only area, let us know and reserve a spot or elevator if your building requires it. We’ll talk through truck access for both addresses when we plan your move.
Finish any packing you’re handling yourself, set aside valuables and the essentials you’ll keep with you, and clear pathways so the crew can work safely. Make sure both homes are accessible and parking is sorted. We’ll send you a simple checklist after booking so nothing important gets missed.
Yes. Choose full-service packing where our crew packs your whole home, partial packing for just the fragile or awkward items, or pack yourself and leave the heavy lifting to us. We bring quality boxes and materials, and we can unpack at the new home too, so you settle in faster.
For safety, we can’t transport hazardous materials — propane tanks, fuel, paint, chemicals, and similar flammables — or perishable food and plants on longer moves. We can move nearly everything else, including specialty items. If you’re unsure about something, ask during your estimate and we’ll tell you how to handle it.
Yes. We have specialized equipment and trained crews for pianos, gun safes, pool tables, antiques, artwork, and other heavy or delicate pieces. These items are padded, protected, and moved carefully through stairs and tight spaces. Mention any specialty items when you book so we send the right crew and gear.
Yes. If there’s a gap between your move-out and move-in — a closing that slips, or a delayed lease — we offer secure short-term and long-term storage. Your belongings stay protected in our facility and we deliver them to your new home when you’re ready, so a scheduling gap never holds up your move.
Absolutely. We handle small moves and single-item jobs as well as full households — a single piano, a few pieces of furniture, or a one-room apartment. Tell us what you need moved and we’ll size the crew and truck to match, so you’re not paying for more than the job requires.
Cal’s Moving is fully licensed by the Oregon Department of Transportation and carries full insurance. For any move, you can ask a company for its ODOT authority — or, for interstate moves, its USDOT number — plus proof of insurance. We’re glad to provide ours, including a certificate of insurance whenever a building or HOA requires one.
Every move includes a basic level of liability coverage. Because that basic coverage is limited, many customers choose added valuation protection for greater peace of mind, especially on larger or higher-value moves. We’ll explain your options clearly during your estimate so you can choose the level of protection that fits.
Our crews are trained, careful, and background-checked, so damage is rare — but if something does go wrong, we make it right. Let us know as soon as you notice an issue and we’ll walk you through our claims process. We explain how coverage and claims work up front, before move day.
Yes. Every member of our crew is background-checked, and our movers are trained, professional, and uniformed. The people in your home are Cal’s employees, not day labor — which is a big part of why customers trust us with their belongings and their homes.
Cal’s Moving is a local, Oregon-based company — not a national franchise or a broker that hands your move off to someone else. When you book with us, the crew that shows up is our crew, and the same team is accountable from your estimate through move day. Local roots mean local accountability.
Yes. Along with local Oregon moves, we handle long-distance and interstate relocations. We plan the logistics, protect your belongings for the longer haul, and keep you informed along the way. See our long-distance moving page for how out-of-state and cross-country moves work with Cal’s.
Yes. We handle commercial and office moves alongside residential ones — from small offices and retail spaces to larger facilities. We can work evenings or weekends to minimize downtime and plan the move so your business is back up and running quickly. Reach out for a free on-site commercial estimate.
Yes. We offer patient, respectful senior moving services, including help downsizing and moving into assisted-living or retirement communities. Our crews work at a comfortable pace and handle the coordination, including any certificate of insurance a community requires. See our senior moving page for details.
We serve communities across Oregon, with crews covering the Portland metro, Salem, Eugene, Corvallis, Bend, Medford, and the Willamette Valley, plus long-distance moves beyond the state. If you’re not sure whether we reach your area, just call — we’ll let you know right away and help plan your move.
Getting started is simple: contact us by phone or through our website to set up a free in-person estimate. We’ll walk through your home, answer your questions, and give you a clear written quote. Once you’re ready, we lock in your date and handle the rest. Reach out whenever you’d like to begin.
