Moving to Portland

A move to Portland is a quest to see the best of what Oregon has to offer. The most populous city in Oregon, Portland is the county seat of Multnomah County. Home to the Portland Trailblazers, Tom McCall Waterfront Park and the prestigious Rose Garden district, this city’s reputation for being welcome to all walks of life and preserving the environment are second to none.

Portland is broken up into large neighborhoods that have unique offerings.

Southwest Portland neighborhoods are on the west side of the Willamette River and encompasses the downtown area south of Burnside.  These neighborhoods have a suburban feel with smaller downtown areas and large parks.

Southeast Portland neighborhoods go from the Willamette River, east all the way to the edge of Gresham, and from Burnside, goes south all the way to Milwaukie.  These neighborhoods are historic, quirky and eclectic. A move to Southeast Portland means living in the heart of what makes Portland unique.

Northeast Portland neighborhoods go from the Willamette River east all the way to the Gresham border, and from Winning Way at the Rose Quarter north to Rail tracks just before the Columbia River.  Revitalization efforts have been focused on Northeast neighborhoods, making these areas a desirable place to call home.  A move to Northeast Portland means being a part of transforming Portland into an ideal city for all people.

The majority of Portland children attend the Portland Public School District.   This district is the largest school district in Oregon, and is highly ranked due its diversity and athlete friendly reputation.  Grant and Lincoln High Schools receive the highest ranks for public high schools in the districts. Many of the finest private schools in Oregon can be found in Portland, including Central Catholic High School Northwest Academy, and Oregon Episcopal School. Clackamas Community College is also nearby, which provides a viable 2-year junior college option. Portland State, University of Portland, and Lewis and Clark are all excellent local universities.

A move to Portland is a safe real estate investment with a median sale price of $486,400, which is up 12% from the previous year.    This median sale price is still low for a major metropolitan area on the West Coast. The Port of Portland is a hub for jobs as it’s the third largest export port on the West Coast.  Technology and athletic apparel headquarters also provide numerous jobs for Portlanders.  Breweries and Coffee Roasters employ many in Portland as well.

Wondering what weather to expect in Portland? Like much of the Pacific Northwest, the city gets more rainfall than the national average and fewer sunny days. However, despite the frequently overcast skies, the average temperature usually stays above freezing, so the city only gets about 2 inches of snow per year. The best time to visit Portland is during July and August when the temperature reaches the high 70s and low 80s with less cloud coverage.
