Packing is often the biggest unknown in a Florence move — how long does it take, what materials do you need, are there items that need special handling? Cal’s Moving & Storage offers full-service and partial packing for Florence customers, with all materials provided and a process refined across thousands of Oregon moves. Here is how it works on the coast.

Florence is roughly a 75-mile drive from Cal’s Corvallis headquarters via OR-99W and OR-126 through Mapleton, so we book Florence moves with a little more lead time than our in-valley jobs to make sure crews and trucks are positioned for the coast. The drive is part of the job and we handle it — you do not pay for our drive time the way you might with movers who tack on hourly travel charges from inland origins.

The other Florence-specific factor: the coastal climate. Salt air, persistent moisture, and (in the dunes neighborhoods) wind-driven sand all affect how we wrap and load. Upholstered furniture, electronics, mattresses, and wood pieces get extra protective wrapping for any move that involves coastal exposure on either end. We also bring floor protection for homes near the dunes that tend to track sand — small detail, but it matters when we are walking back and forth all day.

What Our Florence Packing Service Includes

Full-service packing includes all packing materials (boxes, paper, bubble wrap, tape, mattress bags, dish-pack inserts), professional crew with packing experience, careful wrapping of fragile items (dishes, glassware, art, electronics), labeling of every box by room and contents, special handling for valuable or sentimental items, and unpacking service at the destination if you want it (we unpack into rooms or onto surfaces; we do not put dishes in your cabinets unless requested). Partial packing for kitchens-only or fragile-only is also available.

Full-Service Packing in Florence

Most Florence customers who hire packing services do it for one of three reasons: time pressure (they don’t have time to pack themselves), physical limitations (an aging-in-place customer or someone with mobility issues), or fragile-item-heavy households (lots of dishes, art, antiques, electronics). For full-service packing, the crew typically arrives the day before move day and packs the home methodically room by room. A 3-bedroom home is usually a full day of packing for a 2–3 person crew.

Specialty Packing for Coastal Moves

Coastal Florence moves benefit from a few specialty packing techniques. Electronics and wood furniture get extra protective wrapping to manage moisture exposure during transit. Mattresses and upholstered furniture go into sealed protective covers. Art and framed pieces use corner protectors and rigid cardboard layers. Books and paper get double-walled boxes to handle weight without damage. We use these techniques on every Florence move that involves coastal exposure.

Florence Areas We Serve

We move customers throughout the Florence area, including:

  • Old Town Florence — the historic district along the Siuslaw River, including the Bay Street commercial corridor and the older single-family streets nearby
  • Heceta Beach — the coastal residential area north of town, including the mobile home parks and beachfront properties
  • North Florence — the newer single-family developments north of the Siuslaw River bridge along Highway 101
  • South Florence — properties along Highway 101 south of town toward the Oregon Dunes
  • Glenada and Westlake — smaller communities just outside Florence proper
  • Surrounding Lane County coast — including Yachats, Mapleton, and the Highway 101 corridor

What to Expect on Move Day in Florence

Packing days run separately from move days. Crew arrives at the scheduled window, walks the home with you, and starts packing room by room (usually starting with kitchen and fragile items, finishing with bedroom and clothing). Each box is labeled by room and contents, taped securely, and stacked in a staging area for move day. The crew works at a sustainable pace — this is detail work, not a race. Most 3-bedroom Florence homes take a full day of packing; larger homes can run 1.5–2 days.

Frequently Asked Questions About Moving in Florence

How much does packing cost in Florence?

Packing is billed hourly at the same rates as moving. A 2-mover crew runs $130–$170 per hour; a 3-mover crew runs $175–$220. Materials are billed separately at retail-equivalent rates. A typical Florence 3-bedroom home full-service pack runs $800–$1,500 in labor plus $200–$400 in materials. Partial packing (kitchen-only or fragile-only) starts at $300–$500.

Do you provide all the packing materials?

Yes. We bring boxes, packing paper, bubble wrap, tape, mattress bags, dish-pack inserts, and any specialty materials needed. You do not need to buy or supply anything — we add materials to the invoice based on what was actually used (we don’t charge for unused boxes).

Can you do partial packing — just the kitchen or just the fragile items?

Yes. Partial packing is common when customers want to handle the easy items (clothing, books) themselves but want professional help with the kitchen, china cabinet, art, or electronics. Tell us during the estimate which rooms or item types you want us to pack.

Do you unpack at the destination?

Yes — unpacking service is available at the new location. Standard unpacking puts items into the destination rooms and onto surfaces (kitchen items on counters, books out of boxes, etc.). We do not put dishes into your cabinets unless you specifically ask — most customers prefer to organize their own kitchen storage.

How fragile is too fragile for you to pack?

We pack just about everything — china, crystal, art, electronics, antiques, sculpture. For exceptionally valuable or fragile items (museum-quality art, instruments worth $20K+, etc.), we may recommend a specialty crating service for that specific item while we handle the rest. We discuss this during the walkthrough.
